Why can't helicopters fly over the meteor's crater in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider?

When they're flying towards the meteor's crater in the Arctic Manfred Powell (Iain Glen) says "helicopters can't fly over the city it's a dead zone." Now what does that mean?
